Halo Top Ice Cream Review – White Chocolaty Macadamia

Time for another deep dive into another ice cream company catering to the low carb/ Keto lifestyle. Visiting the local Walmart Superstore in our area on a Thursday afternoon and I must say that this place was booming. The parking lot was packed and at first glance I got no inkling of social distancing… until I walked in the front door. New York (along with many other states) has implemented a mandate to wear a mask in public places where social distancing may not be possible. So fully masked up I braved the crowded Walmart in search of getting everything on my Honey-Do list I made my regular stroll thru the grocery section to search for Keto Friendly… in the refrigerated section a flavor that just caught my eye and I had to give this one a whirl…

Halo Top Creamery

Halo Top Creamery is an ice cream brand was founded around 2011 by former attorney Justin Woolverton of Latham & Watkins LLP. Woolverton had begun making ice cream in his own kitchen with the goal of reducing his consumption of carbohydrates and refined sugars. After a shaky start Halo Top selling new food brand in 2017 with sales of $342 Billion (with a “B”) according to IRI Data. A GQ reporter ate nothing but Halo Top Creamery for ten days in 2016. The article went viral and gave the brand much-needed exposure away from just health and fitness. At the end of his 10 day Halo Top diet he had lost nearly 10 lbs and 3% body fat, not bad for someone that started off weighing just under 154 lbs with 15% body fat. By mid 2017, it was the best-selling pint-sized ice cream in the US with 28.8 million tubs sold.

White Chocolaty Macadamia Nut

Allergy Information

Contains Egg, Macadamia Nuts, Milk.

For those of us keeping score the entire pint is 460 calories 36g of fat, 19g of protein and 45g of total carbs. Of those carbs 11g of dietary fiber and 26g of sugar alcohol (Erythritol) for a total of 8 net carbs for the entire pint! Remember that nutritionist recommend that you subtract half of the dietary fiber and sugar alcohol total giving you a more realistic 9 net carbs per serving, which is still manageable to squeeze into your macros for the day.

Beyond that the list of ingredients are pretty clean…. I can pronounce almost every one of them and that’s a good sign.

The Taste Test

It’s a blend of vanilla, white chocolate and nuts, yet it somehow reminded me of a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino. Right off the bat the taste of this was off the charts… I didn’t feel like I was eating a low carb treat at all. The are chunks of white chocolate bits and macadamia are an excellent touch. As with most low carb treats they freeze pretty hard and this flavor was no different. I waited the obligatory 15- 20 minutes to thaw, but it was still on the hard, crumbly side… I should have waited closer to 30 minutes on this one… live and learn.

I can see buying this flavor outside of my quest to review and try all the Keto Friendly ice cream desserts… I know, right… reviewing ice cream flavors is like kissing all the supermodels, only less detrimental to marriage.

The Review

3 out of 5 Ole’s

This is different from any Keto friendly Ice cream dessert that I’ve come across. The flavor was good and I didn’t come into this review with a preconceived notion on what the ice cream should taste like, unlike the Elightened Chocolate Glazed Donut flavor review… where comparisons are inevitable and that could be a disadvantage in a purely subjective review. This could have been a better rank if the texture were creamier, this was so crumbly

This flavor being so new, there aren’t many other reviews that we can point to for reference… but here’s what some prominent blogs are saying about Halo Top’s White Chocolaty Macadamia Flavor:

The sophisticated taste of macadamia nut and white chocolaty goodness unite in this creamy, ultra-filtered milk frozen dessert. – Perfect Keto

Perhaps the most sophisticated of the seven new pints, this one has macadamia nut and white chocolate — a decidedly grown-up attitudethekitchn.com

This YouTuber posted a less favorable review of this flavor click here to check out her review.

Where can you buy Halo Top White Chocolaty Macadamia Nut?

These flavors are new and harder to find… I was lucky to find this in my local Walmart and I paid $4.79 for it which is a good price for Keto -friendly Ice cream that normally sells for $5.99 per pint. Typically, I’ll post links to buy from Amazon, but like I said this is too new even for them. However, I did find a link to Hannaford’s a local grocer in the New England area with 189 stores… they had discounted this to $4.39

Follow this link to Halo Top’s locator page find out which grocer near you carries this.

Have you tried White Chocolaty Macadamia flavor ice cream or any of the new Keto Series flavors from Halo Top? Let me know what you think in the comments, I respond to every comment!.

  1. I love ice cream and I just love this article. Wow, really lower carb’s and eating it is good for you as well. Got to jump in my truck and go to the nearest store to but some! Just reading this good article is making me HUNGRY for ice cream!

Well written and put together. The good contents goes very well with your media, the flow of the contents goes smoothly through out this article. Easy to read. Good Job!

    1. Laurence… thank you for commenting and thank you for your service. I served in the Marine Corps back in 1980 – 1986, I can’t imagine 22 years of service… kudos to you! Ice cream has always been my Kryptonite, the low carb/keto friendly ice cream flavors flooding the market now make the low carb lifestyle a little more palatable… I still need to manage to macros, perhaps even more so since I’m locked down and reviewing several flavors within a short amount of time!

  2. Thanks for the review about Halo Top ice cream. I think this is my first this seeing a brand going low-carb ice cream. I believe health is a priority in our life because of so many cases of cancer and heart disease. People need to be more cautious about the amount of exercise they did and sugar or carb consumption they take in. I am staying in the UK and would like to try them out if they are here one day. The flavours sound good as well, I would tell this to some of my freinds in America as well to ask them to try it out, thanks for the review.

    1. Thanks for commenting Joshlala… halo Top became the top selling ice cream brand in the US in 2017, but by no means is this the only option. Take a look at my post on Enlightened, they also have a series of Keto friendly ice cream and my post on Rebel Creamery. With any luck, you may be able to find one of these brands in the UK.

  3. Hello there Bob. I love your website. So many people are on the Keto diet and struggle with it. Especially those who love ice cream and sweet treats in general. I am glad you shared your honest opinion, only giving the ice cream 3/5 stars. This will help people save money and not waste it on a product they do not enjoy!

    1. Rashaad, thank you for the kind words… just keep in mind that my opinion is subjective and you may have a different opinion altogether. The takeaway from this post is… that people trying to maintain a low carb lifestyle or limit sugar intake, have options… reviewing the different flavors is just the fun part

  4. Hi Bob,

Thanks for this review, I’m not usually a dessert person, but for some reason when I’m on a keto diet to shred, the desserts are all I crave!

I’d seen the Halo top ice cream in all the supermarkets in the UK (no so sure about the white chocolaty macadamia flavour, but I’ll check next time I go), but I’ve been a bit wary of trying keto ice cream since the Quest bar incident… I bought 10, 8 are still in my cupboard I just can’t get on with them!

I have no issues with texture, so I don’t mind that this ice cream is a bit crumbly, but flavour is king and your description has my mouth watering… it’s going on the list for the next shopping trip!

    1. Lisa,
Thanks for commenting. That’s what the kids are for… they eat anything. Mine are grown, but they show up periodically to do laundry and raid the pantry… Glad you found some value in the post… let me know how your search goes

  5. Hi Bob,

I must admit my first choice is always going to be Peanut Butter Chocolate when it comes to Halo Top’s creations, but it’s interesting to get another perspective on a different flavour.

I totally get where you’re coming from, as I never feel like I’m having a low carb dessert, you get all the taste, but none of the bloat afterwards. Love it.

I don’t know how you managed to wait 15 minutes, never mind considering 30 minutes. I can’t even tell you how many spoons I’ve bent or mishappen over the years through a lack of patience.

Keep up the great work and stay safe on those shopping trips.

    1. Bent spoons… that’s hilarious!
I know exactly what you mean, once you make the decision to pop open an ice cream it’s “game on” and you want to dig right in.
      Thanks for commenting!

  6. You did a great Bob! I believe that this is the information that can’t be find on the web easily and you decided to share it with others for free, that’s really great!
I didn’t know much about halo top ice cream company but I’ve been always interested to know more about this and your comprehensive article helped me a lot. I don’t know if you wrote this post 100% by yourself or got help from other sources as well, anyway, it has really brilliant information which convinced me to share it with my friends on social networks.
I think, the Internet needs more quality posts like yours these days, especially when we see a lot of crappy ads and scams about this topic. You can’t read a post easily on a website without seeing tons popups but your site and post is an ideal example of a quality article which is not covered by annoying ads, has very useful information and lets readers enjoy reading every piece of it.

Thank you again and I wish you continue providing such that quality information in the future which turn the Internet and blogs into a better place to surf!

    1. Hey Ali…Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes, I write these posts myself and I try to write them in a manner that I would enjoy reading…. I hate trying to read a post that has one annoying pop up after another. Thanks for sharing this too!

  7. Hi Bob,
Interesting review! It is the first time I hear about Keto Ice Cream. I have a general idea about Keto: It is basically about having a healthier choice I think. I don’t know the details but I would love to know more about the concept. New flavors are challenging for people. It’s interesting to look into your perspective but also those of other reviewers. Everyone has their own taste.
I would try this just because of the white chocolate.
