Keto Desserts You Can Buy – Enlightened Chocolate Glazed Donut

Strolling thru the local Hannafords grocery store, making my way past the empty wasteland that used to house paper goods, I make it a habit of taking a pass thru the freezer section to see what goodies are in the ice cream section. Ice cream for anyone following low carb or Keto lifestyles for years was a hard “NO”. With the increased popularity of the Keto Diet and the demand for low carb treats companies, both large and small are cashing in on the opportunity. Great news for folks following a ketogenic lifestyle, however with increased popularity comes the need to remain ever vigilant as demand for low carb treats does not go unnoticed by marketing teams for BIG FOOD.

Enlightened brand of ice cream is owned by Michael Shoretz, founder and CEO of Beyond Better Foods. Founded in 2013 they are makers of ice cream that is good for you. They specialize in low calorie Ice cream desserts and Dairy-Free ice cream desserts. Here’s their story pulled from the Enlightened website

Our Story

Michael Shoretz didn’t always know much about nutrition. That changed when his father was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Fascinated with learning how to help people live healthier lives, Michael studied health policy and became a certified personal trainer.

Michael’s clients often confessed to eating ice cream by the pint, eager to make up for their late-night treat with a trip to the gym and desperate for a recommendation for a healthy ice cream option. Michael quickly realized that while better-for-you options existed, there always seemed to be a catch. Fewer calories just meant “sugar instead of fat.” Low sugar meant “filled with artificial ingredients.”

Ever the ice cream lover, Michael decided to try making some himself that would fit his clients’ needs—not only high in protein, but low in calories, fat, and sugar. With the help of talented experts and enthusiastic friends and family, the first box of Enlightened ice cream bars was created in 2012.

Following the white-hot “keto” trend, in 2019 they launched the Enlightened Keto Collection. Eight creamy and delicious flavors, each with 1g net carbs per serving.

1. Caramel Chocolate Double Dough (NEW!)

2. Red Velvet

3. Chocolate Glazed Donuts

4. Peanut Butter Fudge

5. Mint Chocolate Chunk

6. Butter Pecan

7. Coffee & Cream

8. Chocolate Peanut Butter

At 11g of carbs per serving this can fit nicely into a Keto Diet daily carbohydrate target. For those that track net carbs the 2g of fiber and 8g sugar alcohol bring the net carb count to a jaw dropping 1g of net carbs, 4g of net carbs for the entire pint!

Be forewarned, not everyone agrees that subtracting full value of sugar alcohol (like erythritol) is accurate. The University of California, San Francisco recommends counting 1/2 of the grams of sugar alcohol from the total

Because sugar alcohols are hard for the body to digest, the effect on blood sugar levels is less than standard sugar. When counting carbohydrates for products made with sugar alcohols, subtract half of the grams of sugar alcohol listed on the food label from the total grams of carbohydrate.

Remember that because sugar alcohols are harder for your body to digest, eating too many sugar alcohols may cause digestive complaints like gas, cramping and diarrhea.

The Taste Test

Finally we get to the good part! The name of this flavor caught my eye because who doesn’t love the taste of a chocolate glazed donut? Living a Keto Lifestyle precludes me from eating a Chocolate Glazed Donuts, but the taste is etched in my memory from the olden days. A Chocolate glazed donut from Dunkin Donuts packs 410 calories, 42g of carbohydrates and 20g of sugar… Like “shaking hands”, I don’t don’t see that happening anytime soon

As with most Keto-friendly ice cream, it’s recommended that you let them sit for 15 – 20 minutes to thaw after removing it from the freezer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this pint was very creamy and not “crumbly” at all. The pint is has a french vanilla hue with chocolate swirls. In general the sweetness is good, not overly sweet, but sweeter than the Rebel Ice Cream Salted Caramel in an earlier review. The chocolate swirls mixed with the donut flavored vanilla give an overall flavor reminiscent of an actual chocolate glazed donut!

The Verdict

The texture was excellent, smooth and creamy, just as you would expect a pint of premium ice cream would be. I’m disappointed in the amount of the chocolate swirl, with premise that you’re getting the taste of a chocolate glazed donut I felt that there should be more chocolate swirl.

The flavor was solid, certainly tastes like you eating an ice cream, sweet and no aftertaste. However, the name of the flavor sets the bar pretty high… maybe unfairly high. While the flavor IS slightly reminiscent of a chocolate glazed donut, some of that claim comes from the power of suggestion… meaning that if I were blind taste tested and had to “name” what this flavor reminded me of, I’m not certain that I would attribute it to a chocolate glazed donut.

I rate this a solid 3 out of 5…as is with every flavor I review, I’ll definitely finish this pint at some point but it won’t be a favorite that I go back and buy for personal consumption

What’s your favorite?

What ‘s your favorite low carb ice cream flavor… with so many Keto-friendly ice cream flavors on the market today and the summer months just around the corner, I would like to hear what flavors you’ve tried and your thoughts. Post them in the comments below and I guarantee to respond in a timely manner

  1. Thanks for this informative article. We have a Type 1 Diabetic grandson and were unaware that this type of ice cream even existed. What a game changer. Thanks for sharing this information. Do you know if that is available in Canada since I currently can’t just hop over the border and pick up some?

  2. Wow! This is the best review article for an ice cream lover that wants to follow a low carb diet. If ice cream were the only excuse for not starting on a low carb diet, this article would have abolished it.
Thank you for the motivating read!

    1. Johanna,
You’re too kind, thank you for the encouraging words.
I see that you’re a vegan… I’ve been thinking of doing a 30 day Vegan keto challenge for myself. Have you ever considered it?

  3. WOW! I never heard of this type of ice cream until I read your post. This ice cream brand is dairy free with so many different flavors. You really broke it all down helping me to understand how this is a great ice cream and it is more healthier compared to other brands of ice cream. Thanks for the way you explained things including sugar alcohols, and how it is hard for our bodies to digest. O, yes it is better not to eat much to avoid those complications that you listed. The delicious flavors will make me really need to set my mind to eating just 2 spoonfuls lol. Really great post!!!!

    1. I’m so glad you got some value from this post. Many times before posting on a topic doubt will cross my mind and I’ll say to myself, “everyone already knows all about this”, but that’s not true. 2 spoonfuls? you’ve got WILLPOWER girlfriend!

  4. Posts like these really demonstrate how extensive the range of keto-friendly foods is becoming. I always query whether healthy versions of foods taste nice or whether you’d be better of sucking on a cube of ice. But this post has clarified that anyway, so thank you for posting such an honest review!

    1. Sharon… I was thinking the same thing… should I just sprinkle sugar free syrup over shaved ice and call it a day? I’m on a quest to find my favorite flavor…. better than fighting windmills!
Thanks for the read and for the kind words

  5. I’ve seen the Enlightened ice cream at the store, but hesitant to try it as I’m a picky eater. After reading your review though, I think I’ll give it a try; smooth and creamy is what convinced me.
I’ve tried Edy’s Slow Churned No Sugar Added ice cream, so I’m interested to see how Enlightened compares. Thanks for the review.

    1. Haven’t seen the Edy’s version… I’ll keep an eye out for it to see it if ‘s Keto-friendly.
Thanks for the read and the kind words… stay safe!

    1. Ice cream is my Keto Kryptonite… this just helps me stay on point, as long as I consume in moderation. I try to stay true to total carbs over net carbs… the whole net carbs thing is a little sketchy to me.
      Thanks for reading!

  6. Hey,

I love this post. Low calorie ice cream is definitely something that all of us ice cream lovers could do with at the minute. Especially during lockdown when we are not exercising as much as we usually did before. My favourite would definitely be caramel chocolate double dough. That sounds like the most unhealthy one too 🙂

I’ll see if I can purchase that flavour and if I do then I’ll let you know what I think. I’ll give my own review on it in fact.

Thank you for sharing this, it’s made my day. Keep up the amazing work on your site, I love it.

All the best and stay safe,

    1. That one sounds amazing… it’s new and I haven’t seen it at the grocer yet. Please link me to your review when you post it…
Thanks for the read and the kind words!

  7. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing another awesome article. The last one was mouthwatering. This is is the same. I haven’t tried Enlightened ice cream yet, but I might. I’m disappointed to read that the name and the taste were two different worlds when you were testing it. In any case, thanks for sharing!

    1. Maybe I’m being a little overly critical, the reviews are my personal opinion, yours could be different…depending on your affinity for chocolate glazed donuts 🙂
It’s all fun and I get to try all of these different flavors… while throwing in a little intermittent fasting to account for the calories
      Thanks Ivan!

  8. This is really good to see here and thank you so much for writing. I am quite surprised that an ice cream review could be this detailed. Wow! Well I feel that most people often relapse in their diet plan due to ice cream in take but with this post here, you have showed that anyone can still take ice cream while maintaining the proper diet plan. Thank you so much for Sharing

    1. Ella, thanks for the kind words and the “detailed review” compliment. Having replacements for snacks, like ice cream make this more of a lifestyle vs a diet… and help in the overall ability to maintain the lifestyle instead of dropping off.

  9. Hello Bob, it’s nice to see i can actually take some of these stuff and finally i am having a really good believe about this diet, it’s not as bad as some people have made it seem and i like it. Me and my family have decided to go into this diet since we have been learning about it and this thing here gives me so much conviction that it’s not bad and I’m not deprived from so many things. Cheers.

    1. That’s awesome to hear…. the best part of living a low carb lifestyle is that there are no programs, supplements, meals that you MUST buy to participate. It’s really about educating yourself about nutrition and how it affects your body… best of luck, stay safe you and your family!

  10. This is a very good post that explains very well all about the ketogenic diet. You know, all I used to think of this diet is that it is too strict and doesn’t let one swerve into other different foods available. With this that you have written however, I see that there is even a type of icecream that I can eat and the ketogenic diet is actually flexible. The glazed donut is something I’d like to try.

    1. I’ve heard other people say that this is a strict diet, but I’ve never felt that way. In fact I’ve found it to be common sense in many ways. Eat whole foods, lean meats, healthy fats & leafy green vegetables, stay away from processed foods, refined sugars & grains. Managing to a limit on carbohydrates makes it easy to identify foods you want to eat and those that you want to limit or stay away from entirely

  11. Hello there, thanks for sharing this awesome article I know it would be of great help to the public as it has been of help to me…I Love the enlightened brand,me and my family have been regular customers for some time now and we never get tired of it,I discovered something some weeks back sometimes when you get like for cups of the same flavour two might be different from the other two in taste….but all they same they are good.

    1. Hmmm… interesting point. Different pints of the same flavor can vary in taste. I had not considered that . Thanks for that, I want to be able to give honest and insightful reviews and I might need to take that into consideration

  12. I must say that keto diet is the best, I have been on it for some time now and it has really been favourably to me. I am not actually a fan of ice cream, but I think these ice cream are nice and for those lovers of chocolates and ice cream who have been wanting to try out keto diet will be very glad to know that these types of ice cream are available. This is a no more hidrance to keto diet for ice cream lovers.

    1. How long have you been on Keto? What was your motivation to start? I started in order to manage to a weight loss goal, but the more I am involved in the community I find people that follow a low carb lifestyle for completely different reasons

  13. Well for Michael to have the thought of helping a diabetes type 2 patients, and also the way he was able to convert it to ice cream and also reduce the sugar so as not to cause so much damage to the patient.but he did it in a way that the patient can be happy and that for me is magnificent.

    1. They say that “Necessity is the mother of invention”, Michael Shoretz saw a problem first hand when his dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and he “solved” that problem. That’s literally the definition of an entrepreneur!

      thanks for reading!
